Atlantic City, New Jersey

This is a 1927, 103 ft. Trumpy Motor Yacht called Freedom from New Port.  This yacht was tied at the end of the dock  blocking us in so we had to wait for it to leave.  This boat was beyond words for its beauty.  It has five state rooms and was refitted in 2007.

The sun is shinning with very little wind as we left South Jersey Marina heading for the inlet to the Atlantic Ocean.  The Ocean was pretty clam compared to Fridays high waves, which are now soft roller waves.  One thing we learned just because the wind dies down it take another day for the waves.

To navigate around New Jersey we have to travel about a mile off shore in the Atlantic Ocean.  So here we go, the weather and wind are in our favor, suppose to be a good day for navigating the 35 miles to Atlantic City.  This is the first time we have actually traveled out in the Atlantic Ocean.  The water is so clean and the air smells so fresh.

This shore line is called Wildwood a city in Cape May and a popular summer resort destination.  Bill Haley & His Comets performed “Rock Around The Clock” Memorial Day weekend in 1954 at the HofBrau Hotel in Wildwood.  The song’s status as one of the first rock and roll hits has given rise to the city’s claim as “the birthplace of rock and roll.”  The Wildwood Boardwalk features several amusement parks and shops.

Atlantic City is a resort city in New Jersey known for its casinos, boardwalk, and beach.  Established in the 1800s as a health resort, today the cities dotted with glitzy high-rise hotels and nightclubs.  The first boardwalk was built-in 1870 along a portion of the beach in an effort to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies. Businesses were restricted and the boardwalk was remove each yr. at the end of the peak season.  The boardwalk intersects with the historic Steel Pier, with a Ferris wheel and other amusement rides, and Boardwalk Hall, home of the Miss America pageant.  In 1883 salt water taffy was conceived in Atlantic city by David Bradley.  The traditional story is that Bradley’s shops was flooded after a major storm soaking his taffy with salty atlantic ocean water. he sold some salt water taffy to a girl who proudly  walked down to the beach to show her friends.  Salt water taffy was born. The 1920s with tourism at its peak are considered by many historians as Atlantic City golden age.  In 1976 in an effort at revitalizing the city New Jersey referendum passed for casino gambling.  New Jersey law prohibits anyone from owning more than three casinos.  Donald Trump helped bring big name boxing bouts to the city to attract customers to his casinos.  Mike Tyson had most of his fights in Atlantic city in the 1980s.

Absecon Lighthouse is located in the north end of Atlantic City, New Jersey we went by the lighthouse coming into Absecon inlet.  The lighthouse is 171 ft. tall the tallest in the state of  New Jersey and the third Tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States.  It was constructed in 1854 with the light first light on January 15,1857.  Between 1847-1856 at least 64 ocean-going ships were lost off the coast of Absecon Island.  From as early as 1695 Absecon Inlet carried the nickname “Graveyard Inlet.”  The alarming number of shipwrecks recorded by Dr. Jonathan Pitney known as the “Father of Atlantic City” led to the construction of Absecon Lighthouse.  The lighthouse was deactivated in 1933 but still shines every night even though it no loner an active navigational aid.  Absecon Lighthouse and the Lighthouses at Barnegat and Cape May are three sister lights along the southern New Jersey coast all commissioned during the 1850s.

Absecon’s light was first illuminated with mineral oil.  The lighthouse lamps consumed two gallons of oil daily in the summer and three and a half gallons daily in the winter, when nights are longer.  Oil was stored in a separate building a short distance from the light.  The brick oil house is the s

We are now in Atlantic City at Golden Nugget hotel, casino, and marina in New Jersey.  The casino opened in 1985 as Trump’s Castle, it was renamed Trump Marina in 1997.  Trump Castle took a sharp decline in 1990 due to completion from its newly opened sister property Trump Taj Mahal along with the Gulf War and early 1990’s recession.

Trump Marina was sold in 2011 to Landry who renovated it, changed the name to the Golden Nugget, and reopened in 2012.  Landry opened with a new restaurants, outdoor pool, and modernized the resort and marina.

This marina I have to say is the best we have been in with access to the hotel pool, spa, gym, and then you have the casino.  We have paid the same price for very little amenities at other marinas we have docked at.  The cost as we travel up the east coast is also increasing for marina, fuel, and food.  The cost for a marina for one night is like staying at the Julien in Dubuque and I still have to make my own bed.  We finally have a chance to use such an amazing pool area and the weather is not in our favor with overcast sky’s and drizzle.

When we walked into the Golden Nugget we saw Mike & Joell (Mikee Likes it) Myron & Linda (Miss Baily) and Larry & Ekle (Bajan Speed) all loopers.  We had a nice visit with them at the pool.  They are all leaving in the morning and we are staying for another day.

Sunday we went back to the casino I had $20 to spend on slots.  I walked around and didn’t find any slots I wanted to play.  We stopped at the Rusty lounge had a beer and listen to a very talented young lady sing.  I came with $20 left with $20 and had a great time.

The Gold Nugget Casino was amazing to walk through with lights hanging down from the ceiling.  This Casino was amazing to see at night with all the lights, music, and people having a great time just up from our boat.

Trump Taj Mahal is a closed casino and hotel on the Boardwalk in Atlantic city.  The  casino opened in April, 1990 it claimed to be the largest casino in the world and billed itself as the “eighth wonder of the world”.  The Taj Mahal was the highest grossing casino in the city until the opening of the Borgata in 2003 and the Chairman Tower in 2008.  In 2013 the Taj Mahal opened the nations first casino strip club featuring scantily clad dancers.  On Monday October 10, 2016 the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino was shut down.  There are now seven reaming Casinos still in operation.  We walked along the boardwalk past the Taj Mahal what an outstanding building.  I didn’t realize how big it was it seemed like it covered a whole block.

The board walk is actually constructed with boards.  On the boardwalk you will find a few remaining hotels, and small boutique shops.  Nothing like it use to be with towering resort hotels, the bustling boardwalk, the awe-inspiring Atlantic this was one beach party you wouldn’t want to miss.

The beach was almost bare and not maintained but I still got some awesome pictures.

This was our beautiful view Saturday night with the sun reflecting off the Borgata and The Water Club casinos.

Then we have this amazing sunset (which we haven’t seen in a long time).  What a beautiful view from our boat with the one you love.  This has been an amazing journey so far.  We have learned so much, meet so many wonderful people, stayed at the best and worst marinas.
